The Fifth Avenue BID maintains a strong security presence throughout our district. Our highly visible officers, patrol our sidewalks seven days a week from morning to evening. These Community Safety Officers (CSOs) are trained at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, act as a deterrent to criminal activities, provide assistance to our tourists, our residents and our employees and are often first on the scene of accidents and similar dangerous conditions. During his first year in office, Mayor Rudolf Giuliani praised our Business Improvement District as "emblematic of the type of public/private cooperation that yields a win-win-win situation. Communities win, businesses win, all New Yorkers win. Since the Fifth Avenue BID was formed in July of 1993, its members have transformed Fifth Avenue into a more welcoming, more accessible place than ever before."   Last year, the local precinct recognized our efforts with a Certificate of Appreciation "for outstanding service and assistance to the police department" after we helped in the arrests of two separate groups of retail store thieves.  (See also "THEN AND NOW.")
